Wherry success at the EABBA

Norfolk Wherry Brass walked away with 2 trophies at the annual East Anglian Brass Band Association’s contest. The competition was held at St Andrew’s Hall in Norwich on 8th May 2011.

The band performed 4 pieces; Bandology (Eric Osterling, arr. Frank Wright), The Old Rugged Cross (arr. Simon Wood), Andante and Scherzo – euphonium soloist Jim Parr (Reginald Heath) and Dark Side of the Moon (Paul Lovvatt-Cooper).

We were awarded with the Sir Dymoke White Challenge Cup and certificate for second place in the entertainment section. We also won the Ted Samways Cup for third place for our hymn tune, The Old Rugged Cross.

The adjudicator was Roger Webster, former principal cornet player for both the Black Dyke and Grimethorpe Colliery Bands.

Commenting on Bandology, he said the band had a “confident & solid start”, with the “trombones and tubas holding a good rhythmic pulse throughout”. On The Old Rugged Cross, he commented that there were some nice moments and the horn solo at figure A had a “nice full sound”. Webster said that euphonium solo Andante and Scherzo had a “good sense of style from the soloist” and finished by writing that on Dark Side of the Moon, we had to be careful not to get too quiet and make sure important parts are heard.

We were keeping our Facebook fans updated throughout the day and as the results came in, so if you’re not already, become a fan now so you don’t miss out next time!
