More success at the EABBA

Following our success in the London and Southern Counties Regional Qualifying Contest at Stevenage earlier this year Norfolk Wherry Brass entered the East Anglian Brass Band Association’s Spring Contest at St Andrews Hall, Norwich on Sunday May 13th.

The contest was an “entertainment” contest where each of the six bands entered had 25 minutes to play their own choice of music with one piece having to be a Hymn Tune, which was judged separately. Despite being grouped with bands of higher ranking in the national ratings the band came away with a 2nd place for our playing of the popular hymn tune “Deep Harmony” wining the Thomas Cooke Challenge Cup and Certificate.

We were also placed 2nd in the Entertainments section playing “Olympic Fanfare and Theme”, “Fives and Threes”, a solo played beautifully by our Principal Euphonium player Jim Parr – “The Way We Were” and finishing with the strident piece “The Great Gate Of Kiev”, for which we were awarded the Sir Dymoke White Challenge Cup and Certificate. Both cups were presented to our Contest Secretary Yvonne Owers by the adjudicator, professional trombone player and conductor Mr Peter Bassano.

Just a reminder that out next performance is a Jubilee Concert in St Nicholas Church, North Walsham, on Saturday 2nd June starting at 7.30pm. The second half of the concert will include the popular music made famous by the ‘Last Night of the Proms’ so bring your flags, hats etc and help to make this a truly memorable evening of “Jubilee” entertainment. Come and listen to the only brass band in the whole of Norfolk and Suffolk to be invited to the National Finals in Cheltenham at the end of September. Tickets are priced at £5.00 (under 16’s are free) and will be available on the door.
